Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely)

Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely)

Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely)

Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.

Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.

The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

    From Booklist
Newcomers and returning readers alike will devour this companion novel to Marr's ragingly popular Wicked Lovely (2007). The new peace between the Summer King and the Winter Queen isn’t good for everyone: those of the Dark Court, who feed on faeries’ destructive emotions, are dangerously weakened. Irial, King of the Dark Court, needs a solution, and he finds one in the Summer Queen’s mortal friend Leslie. Tormented by memories of abuse, Leslie wants nothing more than to reclaim her body by getting a tattoo, but the enchanted design she selects provides Irial with a direct link to mortals’ emotions. The tattoo binds Leslie and Irial together even as a third faerie works to prevent their destructive yet seductive connection. All of Marr’s characters are complex, defying easy description and evoking sympathy and horror in equal measures, and all cast a thrall that will leave readers willing to forgive plotting that can be difficult to follow. This dark fantasy about survival and transformation is as mesmerizing as its urban faery subjects. Grades 10-12. --Krista Hutley

    Good Read4
The book was good and catches you at the beginning. It was nice to see different characters being described indepth and the tattoo scences itself were very descriptive. I would have loved it more if she continued more with the characters instead of ending it. I am looking forward to her third book now.

This one is better than the first...WAY better4
Ok so, the first book was confusing, but overall good, and this book was WAY WAY better. Since I know what is going on now, it was good! You know who is what what they can do, what they can't do, etc etc. But for some sort of reason, I favor Leslie than Ash. Leslie has history, trama, and she is full of life, while Ash is just honeslty in her own bubble and she kind of gets on my nerves. But I won't go into detail cause I am not here to spoil the book.

Overall, this one is good! Can't wait for the next!

    creepy crawly tatoos4
mesmerising gritty and disturbing. i couldn't put it down, but there is a feeling of despair threaded through the entire book. it keeps from edging into utter hopelessness with a stubborn refusal to give up. very good. will probably linger in your thoughts for a while.

    childrens books5
wonderful time frame in which i recieved the books, came way ahead of time and in excellent condition.

    Terrible Series1
I can't imagine more inappropriate reading for a 5-8 year old. These books are loaded with poor grammar, individual words that are too advanced and, on top of that, they encourage bad behavior. Avoid this series.

    Second Graders Love These Books5
Our second grade granddaughter was thrilled to receive box sets of the Junie B. Jones books. Her mother reports that she will spend two hours a night with these books. She read a chapter to me, and amazed me with her reading ability and enthusiasm. As a retired teacher, I know that it takes a good book to make a good reader, so I am glad to know about Junie B. Jones.

Great books for kids that like chapter books. Less pictures than some books but fun stories.

    WONDERFUL books5
We LOVE the Boxcar Children books. We were introduced to the first one through my daughter's kindergarten home school curriculum and they have been some of her favorites ever since. So far we have only read volumes written by Gertrude Chandler Warner (she wrote books 1 - 19), but have heard good things about many of the other volumes, also. GREAT read-alouds!

    Not at all good1
Despite the author's claim to have been reading about Hawaii before writing this book, the place she describes in the story is hardly Hawaiian. In fact, it's as if the author has never seen a real coconut, been to Hawaii, or frankly, flipped through a travel brochure. There should be some truth in a story like this, otherwise, reading the book is just an exercise. You, yes, you, could have written this book in 3 hours.

I agree with the reviewer who pointed out the stereotypes used to describe the Hawaiians. Happy, dancing, friendly, open faces...It was silly and lazy on the author's part. And how many ancient Hawaiians were named Boka? The letter B was not used for Hawaiian words.

    mom of a 1st grader5
recommend highly as it catches attention of your new reader and is in fact correct on historic/cultural/scientific issues (much of the video/literature is not these days!)

    Read in an Hour5
My 7-year-old read this in a matter of a couple hours. He loved it. He loved all the Magic Treehouse books. He even read a few of them two or three times. Excellent book. Wish they were a little longer so he couldn't zip through them so fast. :D

    From Booklist
Beginning with the die cut on the cover, which completes the title and hides a secret underneath, this delivers a string of delightful surprises as Seeger crisply explores the stages of development in the natural world and, then,  how a story grows. Thickly textured backgrounds provide visual energy for minimalist images that cleverly incorporate additional die cuts. “First the EGG,” reads the text on the opening spread, which pictures the egg through an appropriately shaped hole. When children flip the page, they’ll find a fuzzy chick and its adult counterpart—“then the CHICKEN.” So it goes through the life stages of frog, flower, and butterfly. Suddenly, Seeger turns away from nature. “First the WORD,” she writes, “then the STORY.” “First the PAINT . . . then the PICTURE,” accompanied by a painting that pulls the book together, showing chicken, flower, frog, and butterfly enjoying a beautiful day together. A funny finale sets up the book’s beginning. Pages are sturdy enough to support poking fingers and repeated viewings, both of which are guaranteed. Review
Publishers Weekly In another nimble page-turner, Seeger (Black? White! Day? Night!) toys with die-cuts and strategically paired words. She introduces a chicken-or-egg dilemma on her book’s cover, picturing a plump white egg in a golden-brown nest. Remove the die-cut dust jacket, and a hen appears on the glossy inner cover. The eggshell, thickly brushed in bluish-white and cream, also serves as the chicken’s feathers. This “first/then” pattern is repeated (“First the egg/ then the chicken./ First the tadpole/ then the frog”), with a die-cut on every other page. By flipping a page, readers see the cutout in two contexts. For instance, when an ovoid shape is superimposed on a white ground, it’s an egg; on a yolk-yellow ground, it’s the body of a baby chick. Seeger lines up the recto and verso of every sheet, maintaining a casual mood with generous swabs of grassy greens, sky blues and oxide yellows on canvas. Given the exuberant imagery, the occasional cutout (like the fingernail-size seed of a blowsy peony-pink flower) looks none too impressive. But if minuscule die-cuts seem barely worth the trouble, they do imply the potential in humble sources. Seeger’s clever conclusion brings all the elements together in an outdoor scene that returns readers to the opening: “First the paint/ then the picture… / First the chicken/ then the egg!” Ages 2-6. (Sept.)  Kirkus Reviews Starred Review A deceptively simple, decidedly playful sequence of statements invites readers to ponder, what comes first: the chicken or the egg? Carefully choreographed page turns and die-cuts focus on the process of change and becoming, so “First” sits alone on a yellow background, facing “the EGG”—an egg-shaped die-cut revealing a white egg against an orange-and-brown background. Turn the page, and “then” appears, the egg-shaped die-cut now forming the yellow body of a chick emerging from the shell, facing “the CHICKEN”—the white hen whose body gave color to the previous spread’s egg. Tadpole and frog, seed and flower, caterpillar and butterfly all receive the same treatment, then word and story, paint and picture bring all the disparate elements together, nature being the catalyst for art. Seeger’s vibrant, textured oil-on-canvas illustrations contain a wealth of subtlety, allowing the die-cuts to reveal cunning surprises with each turn of the page. Children and adults alike will delight in flipping the sturdy pages back and forth to recreate the transformations over and over again. Another perfectly pitched triumph from an emerging master of the concept book. (Picture book. 2-6) New York Times Children’s Books Bestseller List at #9

    Eggstrordinary!5
The story is more than a story with the illustrations that are in this book. This is a must have for a preschool library. A wonderful find.

A book that really stimulates imagination/creativity!5
LOVE this book! The author really uses the book format creatively to illustrate simple text. The illustrations are vibrant and simple, the text is minimal, which makes it very "accessible" to my 2 year old. she loves how the pages connect to each other enabling her to predict the story. I also think it helps plant the seed of sequence concepts (first-then). I bought more books by this author because of this book. I highly recommend it!

Short and sweet, but stickers aren't a hit. 4
My 3 and 5 year old love the short story that they can both 'read', (it's only a few sentences per two pages). But, the 'reusable' stickers were not high on my list. They don't remove easily, and for my sons little fingers, were simply something to sob about after they get torn in two.
I ended up removing the sticker pages from the middle, putting the stickers, (which weren't really sized correctly for the pages they were to be applied to), on myself and leaving them as permanent page illustrations.

Its ok...but not for the long term3
The stickers are not really resuable at least for the younger set, which is who follows this show to begin with. I prob wouldn't have purchased if I realized. Its in the 'pile' of books that she doesn't go to often...oh well.

    Fun Max and Ruby Stickers4
A nice sticker book with Max and Ruby pictures and story. A little "light" on the amount of stickers but about right for the reasonable price. Fun pictures; funny smell.

    Amazon.com Review
It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts.

Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-8-Fans of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Scholastic, 1998) won't be disappointed when they rejoin Harry, now on break after finishing his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Reluctantly spending the summer with the Dursleys, his mean relatives who fear and detest magic, Harry is soon whisked away by his friends Ron, Fred, and George Weasley, who appear at his window in a flying Ford Anglia to take him away to enjoy the rest of the holidays with their very wizardly family. Things don't go as well, though, when the school term begins. Someone, or something, is (literally) petrifying Hogwarts' residents one by one and leaving threatening messages referring to a Chamber of Secrets and an heir of Slytherin. Somehow, Harry is often around when the attacks happen and he is soon suspected of being the perpetrator. The climax has Harry looking very much like Indiana Jones, battling a giant serpent in the depths of the awesome and terrible Chamber of Secrets. Along with most of the teachers and students introduced in the previous book, Draco Malfoy has returned for his second year and is more despicable than ever. The novel is marked throughout by the same sly and sophisticated humor found in the first book, along with inventive, new, matter-of-fact uses of magic that will once again have readers longing to emulate Harry and his wizard friends.

HP Chamber of Secrets - sequel measures up to first5
The tale of Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry begins with dire warnings of terrible things to come. And indeed, from a series of attacks during the school year to a gruesome final confrontation, this adventure is darker than the first. Fortunately, Rowling balances the darkness with plenty of levity and light: the charm of the Burrow, flying cars, whomping willows, and a Deathday party, just to name a few.

Through it all, Ron and Hermione help Harry balance schoolwork and Quidditch practices while trying to solve the mystery of the attacks. Along the way, they meet a series of memorable new friends and foes, among them Dobby the subservient house else, Moaning Myrtle the miserable ghost, and Gilderoy Lockhart, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who is his own greatest fan. And as the conclusion nears, Rowling's talent for weaving a tangled web of foreshadowing becomes ever more apparent.

The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn't leave this one!

    Well, it's Paula Deen!5
Any cookbook from Paula Deen is going to be great.
I purchased this for my 10 year old nephew who is a future chef.
The recipes are perfect for children, but best of all, everything is described in detail. Each tool, a whisk for example, will have a picture and instructions on how to use it. Cooking terms are explained so that beginners can easily understand.

I recommend this for children and anyone who is learning to cook for the first time.

    Perfect for beginners5
I'm surprised to see so many complaints about how basic some of the recipes are in this book. It's a children's cookbook, so the recipes SHOULD be simple. I think it's a good mix between homemade (like the pretzels) and easier stuff (like the ants on a log.) As a book geared towards children, the recipe selections are good, and I LOVE the "things you'll need" pages.

We had the porcupine balls for dinner tonight; my seven-year-old daughter made them herself, and she was SO PROUD. They were pretty tasty, too!

    disappointed2
I had really never heard of Paula Dean so take this into consideration. I was bummed that the cookbook has you opening a can of biscuit dough to do this or that. It seems part of the fun of kids cooking is making things from scratch and actually getting their hands dirty. So i was fully disappointed with the the cookbook. It doesn't seem healthy or like something most parents would feed their children, or even have on hand for cooking....I am just bummed that I wasted my money on something i will never use..She has you putting food die into eggs!!!

    How I Became a Pirate

When Braid Beard's pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk--who wouldn't go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate. He throws his food across the table and his manners to the wind. He hollers like thunder and laughs off bedtime. It's the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. Until he finds out what pirates don't do--no reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in. . . . Maybe being a pirate isn't so great after all.
Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon teams up with witty storyteller Melinda Long for a hilarious look at the finer points of pirate life.

    Amazon.com Review
Young Jeremy Jacob is plucked from obscurity while innocently constructing a sand castle and is thrust into a brand-new life as a pirate. Captain Braid Beard and his crew recognize Jeremy as an exceptionally talented digger and they happen to be in desperate need of a digger to help them bury a treasure chest. Jeremy thinks a pirate life sounds like fun, as long as he’s back the next day in time for soccer practice, and so he goes along with the ragtag group of seafaring thugs (with hearts of gold, naturally). And while Jeremy adores the pirates’ lack of table manners and opposition to vegetables, he comes to realize that a life away from his parents lacks some of the niceties to which he’s become accustomed. Nobody tucks him in at night, for instance, and the only book available to read is a treasure map. Melinda Long’s story, narrated with a sense of boastful exaggeration by Jeremy, is full of a sense of high adventure that's lovingly evocative of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tales. David Shannon's illustrations, full of a goofy vibrancy, are a perfect accompaniment to the story. (Ages 4 to 8) --John Moe

    From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-Long has selected an irresistible combination for this age group-pirates and soccer. Jeremy Jacob is building a sand castle when a pirate ship lands nearby. His parents are preoccupied with other chores, so he takes off for an adventure on the high seas to help the men bury their treasure chest. He learns that buccaneers don't bother with manners or bedtimes, which is just fine with him, but it also means no bedtime stories or being tucked in. He tries to teach the pirates to play soccer, at least until the ball gets swallowed by a shark. When a storm hits, forcing the crew to return to shore, Jeremy solves the dilemma of where to bury the treasure-in his own backyard. He even makes it home in time for soccer practice. Paired with Shannon's energetic acrylics of a colorful crew of pop-eyed, snaggly toothed pirates seen from a variety of zany viewpoints (including upside down) and a small boy who is clearly having the time of his life, this rollicking adventure is sure to be a favorite with the storytime crowd.

    From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 3. "Pirates have green teeth--when they have any teeth at all." So begins young Jeremy Jacob's witty recounting of his unexpected high-seas adventure. While building a sand castle at the beach, Jeremy spies a pirate ship. When he's asked to join its crew, he can't resist. On board, he does all sorts of fun pirate stuff: singing sea chanteys, learning pirate lingo, eating with one's hands. And he doesn't have to eat vegetables or take a bath! But, alas, Jeremy soon discovers, there's no goodnight kiss or bedtime story, so there's something to be said for home; besides, he has soccer practice. The rollicking tale is a charmer, with a lively, witty, first-person narrative, highly expressive characters, and farcical elements, including pirate captain Braid Beard's braided beard and his crew's enthusiastic vocal repetitions, in big, bold type, which add read-aloud pep. Shannon's acrylic art is marvelously animated, with bright, bold colors and extraordinary details, from the not-too-scary pirates' green teeth to the deep-blue sloshing sea. Along with swashbuckling humor and fantasy, kids will find much to relate to and appreciate--from excitement and family comforts to the joy of playing soccer. Shelle Rosenfeld

    Illustartions are amazing!!!!5
This book has the best illustrations I have seen. Me and my 4 year old daughter read this book at least three times a week. She has even memorizd some of the story. This is a must have in any childs library.

Two boys' review: A fun pirate story with only a couple minor flaws...4
Both of my young sons love pirate stories and they took to this one quickly, although the book needed some parental editing.

    Two problems:

Jeremy Jacob takes off without telling his parents -- I reinforced with my kids that Jeremy shouldn't leave with the pirates without asking his mother or father.

The author perpetuates an unhealthy attitude towards children eating vegetables, with Jeremy happily announcing that he won't have to eat either spinach or carrots aboard the pirate ship.

    One positive:

Jeremy Jacob comes to realize that living like as a pirate means there isn't someone to read him bedtime stories or hold him close when he is scared.

Overall, this is a fun bedtime book but be careful you're not teaching your children bad behaviors and habits along the way.

    Wonderful Book5
I ordered this book as a gift for my 5 year old nephew. He loves this book and reads it at least twice a day. If you have a little buckaroo, he or she will love this adventure.

    Fifteen Animals!

    Fifteen Animals!

    Fifteen Animals!

The amazing Bob! The amazing Boynton! Because who else but Sandra Boynton could imagine 15 Bobs in one book? Actually, that's 14 Bobs, and one Simon James Alexander Ragsdale the Third (he's a turtle), which gives Fifteen Animals! the added dimension of being a unique counting book—count the Bobs, count the pets, count the bunnies, count the fish. The latest of the Boynton on Board Books, Fifteen Animals! also comes with a free song available via download. It's all the energy and appeal of Boynton: the lively language, distinctive illustrations, and inimitable characters. And music. And counting. And, for the first time, a person character, an earnest little boy who loves animals and happily sings:

    I really like animals,
    I like them a lot.
Fifteen animals is what I’ve got.
    I’ve got fifteen animals.
    They're friendly and tame, and
I’ve given each one a special name.

    Make that Bob.

    Cute Ending5
I like the simplicity of the story line. It's easy for children to follow and lets them concentrate on learning animal types without being destracted with so many other words. The illustrations are great.

    Sandra Boynton rocks4
"Fifteen Animals" is, admittedly (and intentionally) a bit of a one-note joke... But it's also more cute, Boyntonesque fun! The gag is that the narrator loves animals, but gives them all the same name: Bob. He's got a cat named Bob and a frog named Bob and a cow named Bob... indeed, all of his animals have the same name except for one, who has a long, lofty, goofy, aristocratic sounding name instead. It's funny the first time around, although it doesn't have the same sort of rolls-off-your-tongue kookiness and durability as some of Boynton's older books. Still, ya gotta love Sandra Boynton, even when she gives all the animals the same name! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

    15 Animals- BOB!5
As usual Sandra Boynton has created a funny, lively book that toddlers love. We were happy to purchase this book to add to the collection. We appreciate these books so much that we give them away as gifts to friends of ours having babies. Best of all, she writes books that don't hurt parents brains- you can read them 20 times and still enjoy them.

    One of My Twins' Favorites!5
This board book quickly became one of my 15-month-old twins' favorites! The natural rhythm of the book combined with an expressive reading style worked to get my kids totally engaged in this book. My daughter, in particular, has taken from the book a sense of scale...when she pretends to read it to herself, she gets louder and more exaggerated as the number of monkeys and drums increases. A fun book that I would definitely recommend as a gift or for the parent looking to add to their child's early library.

    Great book for toddlers4
This book is short and rhymes. My son loves it. Its not too long that he doesn't lose interest and the rhyming keeps him interested.

    Great book5
This is the first book that my son ever smiled and laughed at. The sing song-y text is a hit with any age. I had the regular version of the book and now have the board book version so that my 15 month old can browse it by himself. He just loves the pictures and words to this book. I highly recommend it.

    Perfect for bedtime reoutine5
We end our bedtime routine with this book. The Wonder Pets never forget to say goodnight to my little one.

    Not a lot going on3
My daughter (18 months) loves the wonder pets and loves books. She likes the pictures in this book, but there is pretty much no text or story line and there aren't enough pages of pictures to interest her for long. Skip this unless your kid is really really young.

a sweet good night story, and a nice hardcover book!5
My son likes (but doesn't love) the Wonderpets, but he got this book as a gift for Christmas. I was surprised that he LOVES it and it has become his favorite bedtime story. The text is very cute and well written and it sounds like the show. The book itself is a nice hardover, and I would buy more books like this because they last longer than the softcover books that tend to rip. Overall a really cute book, even if your child isn't a huge Wonderpets fan!
