Not a Box

Not a Box

Not a Box

A box is just a box . . . unless it's not a box. From mountain to rocket ship, a small rabbit shows that a box will go as far as the imagination allows.

Inspired by a memory of sitting in a box on her driveway with her sister, Antoinette Portis captures the thrill when pretend feels so real that it actually becomes real—when the imagination takes over and inside a cardboard box, a child is transported to a world where anything is possible.

    From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1—In bold, unornamented line drawings of a rabbit and a box, the author-illustrator offers a paean to the time-honored imaginative play of young children who can turn a cardboard box into whatever their creativity can conjure. Through a series of paired questions and answers, the rabbit is queried about why he is sitting in, standing on, spraying, or wearing a box. Each time, he insists, "It's not a box!" and the opposite page reveals the many things a small child's pretending can make of one: a race car, a mountain, a burning building, a robot. One important caveat: the younger end of the intended audience is both literal and concrete in their approach to this material. The box itself, drawn as a one-dimensional rectangle, will be perceived by preschoolers to be flat and not readily understood as three-dimensional. Furthermore, those children are likely to interpret the "box's" transformation to be "magic," while five- and six-year-olds are able to make the cognitive conversion from flat rectangle to three-dimensional box and to understand that the transformation has been made by the rabbit's own imagination. Both audiences will enjoy the participatory aspect of identifying each of the rabbit's new inventions. Knowledgeable adults will bring along a large box to aid in understanding and to encourage even more ideas and play.—Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Old Greenwich, CT

    From Booklist
Wrapped in basic, grocery-bag-brown paper, this streamlined book visualizes a child's imagined games. "Why are you sitting in a box?" reads the opening page, opposite an image of a small rabbit, drawn in the simplest, unshaded lines, who appears next to a square. "It's not a box," reads the text, presumably in the rabbit's defiant voice, on the next page, and equally simple red lines overlay the black-lined rabbit and box to show a speeding roadster. In the following spreads, the questioner (a clueless adult?) continues to ask about the rabbit's plans, while the little voice answers with the book's protest of a title. This owes a large debt to Crockett Johnson's Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955). And as in Johnson's classic, the spare, streamlined design and the visual messages about imagination's power will easily draw young children, who will recognize their own flights of fantasy. Fantastic5
This book is an awesome book for little kids. My daughter is nearly 3 and absolutely loves this book. We first saw it read on Playschool in Australia. It is a great book about with a kids imagination anything can be made out of a box. It is not too tricky with the words so even though my daughter is too young to read she knows all the words off by heart.

    SIMPLE YET WONDERFUL4
I bought this book for both my daughter and a cousin. The cover is what intrigued me the most, and the book description sounded so cute and true of a childs imagination. The illustrations are so simple and not overdone as some childrens books can be. There isn't too much story to where the child gets bored. Very cute. Would definately purchase this book again for any child!

    From Publishers Weekly
The Armistice has been declared, but still there is no sign of Ruthie's father in their little Appalachian town. So, in accordance with the traditions of Pine Grove, it falls to Ruthie and her mother to bring home the perfect Christmas tree to donate to the town. Ruthie had accompanied her father to the rocky cliff where he marked a tree in the spring, so she and her mother set out to find it again, and haul it home. Their trip becomes the basisovernightof a new town legend; Ruthie, chosen for the role of the heavenly angel in the the church Christmas play, finds herself outfitted in a madeover wedding dress of the finest silkanother "miracle" wrought by her hardworking mother. An accomplished, fluid telling garnishes this simple story, as do Cooney's moonlit paintings of wintry evenings and the welcoming glow of fire and lanterns. Ruthie is more or less an observer; her mother is the real heroine. But the way they work together to keep their family's duty is rendered in a harmonious blending of text and pictures. Ages 4-8.

    lovely pictures5
My husband and I went to the little town in NC that is the benefactor of the proceeds of this book. It was a charming place and as warm as the story in this book. The pictures are equally well done as the story. THis has become a permanent part of my Christmas book collection.

    Perfect Christmas Story5
What a delightful story that can remind us of the bygone days of old-fashioned country Christmases! Ruthie is a small-town girl whose family finally receives the honor of choosing the Christmas tree for their town--and sure enough she and her papa find the perfect balsalm. However, war comes and Papa leaves. Ruthie and her mother have more worries than they expected.

This is a surprisingly gritty story of wartime heartache, but it still managed to perfectly capture the Christmas spirit and the true meaning of the holidays. The prose is gentle and folksy, and the illustrations are to die for.

The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree: An Appalachian Story5
This was purchased for my nephew and he loved it. Since he lives in the moutains, it was a story he related too. He liked it so much, I ordered another one for a gift and it was also well received.

    From the Publisher
The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. But it never rained rain and it never snowed snow and it never blew just wind. It rained things like soup and juice. It snowed things like mashed potatoes. And sometimes the wind blew in storms of hamburgers. Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger and so did the portions. Chewandswallow was plagues by damaging floods and storms of huge food. The town was a mess and the pople feared for their lives. Something had to be done, and in a hurry. END

    low price but great condition5
thank you for your bargain price for a great quality book and the timely shipping!

Perfect to Introduce Longer Stories & More Complex Plots5
What struck me first about this story is that there is no "point." It's not a morality tale, there's no lesson -- it's just a fun story that a kid and a grandpa would share. I could totally imagine my late grandfather telling this story to me along with the dozens of other stories and jokes he shared with us when we were little.

I'm not going to get into the plot, because that's well covered elsewhere on this page. But the illustrations are detailed and funny, and the story just gets bigger and more unbelievable and goofy. That exactly what holds a child's attention. Which made me realize, this is a PERFECT book to be reading a child who only sits still for short books. You know... a 2 or 3 year old who can understand the words, but it only interested for short periods. The story moves so quickly and is so giggly and quirky, they will learn to sit for longer with this book for sure.

    Highly recommended!

    wore the book out5
My four kids loved this book to the point that we wore out our copy and had to buy a new one. Now my grandchildren are enjoying it too. I did not always enjoy every story I was asked to read over and over again, but this one was different. I enjoyed reading this as much as they enjoyed listening to it. They would even have fun pretending what foods they would love to rain down on them. What more can you ask of a story.

    cute book5
this book is cute. my daughter read the first one so much we had to get this one.

    Toddlers LOVE Puppies!!5
As a mom of two young children, a book lover and a strong believer in the value of education from day-one, I never would have expected that teeny board books (we're talking graham cracker-sized) would be so popular! But my 17-month-old son will follow me around with this book and say "pup-pup", requesting repeated recitations. And we have hundreds of books!!

He loves the pictures, he loves turning the pages, he loves carrying it around with him. There obviously must be some draw to have a big people-sized thing to carry around that is just his size. Plus, as one other reviewer commented, there are a variety of mediums represented in this book: oil paintings, true pictures, animations. It's a great read - you might scoff at the size, but really, this is what toddlers love! (At least mine do!!)

    Perfect size for tiny hands!5
This extra tiny book is adorable. Perfect sized for her baby hands, its easy for her to carry around the room to us as she shows us each type of dog. Her larger books are more cumbersome and I honestly think she likes that is so small & easy to handle.

The words are simple & perfect for a pre-reader. The pictures include photographs & drawings of many different breeds of dogs, and I think its wonderful that she`s learning so many different dog traits. Its making it easier for her to recognize dogs in other books, as when we get to a page with many different animals in a farm book for example, she`ll point to the farm dog and tell me "Dog!" 100% pleased.

Oodles of fascinating information about NYC wrapped in a great plot4
Geronimo absolutely loves Christmas, and the very idea of his favorite holiday warms his heart on a chilly winter day. He begins planning his usual family holiday dinner in great detail when his grandfather interrupts with disheartening news: "This year, the entire Stilton family will spend Christmas in New York!" Grandfather, it seems, has accepted an invitation to spend Christmas in his friend's fabulous apartment overlooking Central Park. Geronimo, ever the traditionalist, protests --- but to no avail. And when Geronimo hears how excited his nephew Benjamin is, he fakes enthusiasm.

His flight to New York goes fairly smoothly (at least, for nontraveler Geronimo!). It's not until he's in the taxi on his way to the MacMouse apartment that Geronimo runs into a huge problem. He discovers that his wallet is in his suitcase...and he has the wrong suitcase! He accidentally grabbed an identical bag belonging to someone else at the airport. Geronimo doesn't have money or his cell phone, but he does discover a tag on the bag that reads "Mrs. A. Smith." He panics. Smith must be the most common name in the world! How will he ever find the bag's owner and trade her for his own suitcase?

When Geronimo discovers Mrs. Smith's appointment book, he decides he will find her. The first entry for that day is "10:00 Columbia University," so he takes off on foot on a tremendous quest that leads him all over the Big Apple. Geronimo's treasure hunt through the city gives A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS a great plot --- plus oodles of fascinating information about New York City, along with many fun Christmas ideas.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Recovered from the vampire attack that hospitalized her in the conclusion of Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005), Bella celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend Edward and his family, a unique clan of vampires that has sworn off human blood. But the celebration abruptly ends when the teen accidentally cuts her arm on broken glass. The sight and smell of her blood trickling away forces the Cullen family to retreat lest they be tempted to make a meal of her. After all is mended, Edward, realizing the danger that he and his family create for Bella, sees no option for her safety but to leave. Mourning his departure, she slips into a downward spiral of depression that penetrates and lingers over her every step. Vampire fans will appreciate the subsequently dour mood that permeates the novel, and it's not until Bella befriends Jacob, a sophomore from her school with a penchant for motorcycles, that both the pace and her disposition begin to take off. Their adventures are wild, dare-devilish, and teeter on the brink of romance, but memories of Edward pervade Bella's emotions, and soon their fun quickly morphs into danger, especially when she uncovers the true identities of Jacob and his pack of friends. Less streamlined than Twilight yet just as exciting, New Moon will more than feed the bloodthirsty hankerings of fans of the first volume and leave them breathless for the third.–Hillias J. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. "Which is tempting you more, my blood or my body?" Things are heating up between Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen, in this sequel to the immensely popular Twilight (2005). Then Bella is injured at her birthday party, and the Cullens' reaction to her blood sends Edward's family packing. Bella is inconsolable until she discovers that reckless behavior allows her to hear Edward's warning voice in her head. To keep him close, she decides to live as dangerously as possible, acquiring two motorcycles and developing a close friendship with Jacob, who helps her rebuild them. Romantics will miss Edward's presence, but the suspense created by a pack of werewolves bent on protecting Bella from a vindictive vampire will keep them occupied until the lovers can be reunited. The writing is a bit melodramatic, but readers won't care. Bella's dismay at being ordinary (after all, she's only human) will strike a chord even among girls who have no desire to be immortal, and like the vampires who watch Bella bleed with "fevered eyes," teens will relish this new adventure and hunger for more. Review
All is not well between demon-magnet Bella and Edward Cullen, her vampire Romeo. An innocent papercut at Edward's house puts Bella in grave danger when various members of the Cullen family can barely resist their hunger at the smell of blood. The Cullens promptly leave town, afraid of endangering Edward's beloved, and Bella sinks into an overwhelming depression. Months later, she finally emerges from her funk to rebuild her life, focusing on her friendship with besotted teen Jacob from the reservation. Bella's unhealthy enthrallment to Edward leads her into dangerous and self-destructive behavior despite her new friends, and supernatural complications are bound to reappear. Bella's being hunted by an evil vampire, and Jacob's adolescent male rage turns out to be incipient lycanthropy: It seems many Quileute Indians become werewolves in the presence of vampires, their natural enemies. Psychic miscommunications and angst-ridden dramatic gestures lead to an exciting page-turner of a conclusion drenched in the best of Gothic romantic excess. Despite Bella's flat and obsessive personality, this tale of tortured demon lovers entices. (Fantasy. 13-16) (Kirkus Reviews)

    GOT Me Hooked 5
I'm not much of a reader but when I seen the movie to Twilight I just had to read the book. It was a book I couldn't put down; then had me wanting to read the other books ASAP. So I read all four books in 6 days not wanting to put them down. These books are down right hilarious and kept me on an edge to know what was coming next. I just LOVED the characters too. I'm a person of few word... great book to read, so buy it!

Not great but still strangely compelling 3
Bella Swan is just your average love-sick teenage girl--with one slight difference. The object of her affection is a vampire who has dumped her. To further complicate matters, it turns out her best friend is also a monster straight out of an old myth.

I'm not exactly sure why this book (and the Twilight series as a whole) is so popular. It isn't exactly great literature. It just sort of meanders along without much action or character development and the ending is rather anticlimactic. For a love story about vampires there is remarkably little bloodsucking or sensuality.

Instead there is a lot of immature teenage angst. As I read, I found myself wanting to slap Bella. But then, I'm not the book's target demographic and I viewed her emotional trauma through somewhat jaded eyes of my own experiences.

Bella is the stereotype of every woman who refuses to let go even when her jerk of a boyfriend leaves her high and dry. Even with a new and better love staring her in the face, she continues to cling to her hallucinations.

There is something mesmerising about this book. Because it is written in the first person it's like being privy to Bella's innermost being--all her hopes and fears, joys and sorrows. Perhaps that is the secret to Twilight's success: it taps into universal emotions of love and loss, the desire to belong and the realisation that we are all monsters on some level.

While I don't see myself ever getting caught up in the Twilight frenzy, I can't dismiss this book as trendy tripe either. If you look, you can find layers of meaning. It's a great book to discuss in a group setting because it speaks to different people in vastly different ways. And it is an entertaining read--especially on a chilly rainy day.

    Monette4
My least favorite in the series do to Edward's absence. I love his caracter so much and missed reading about him.

    Great book series5
My 6 year old daughter is in 1st grade and loves this book series. She catches herself reading longer than the required time for her homework. I'm all for her being interested in reading and not just any reading but good stories for her age. I'm amazed she started reading these chapter books in Kindergarten. She also loves animals. There is also a series for colors (which we also have) and weather (which she's getting for Christmas).

Lauren the Puppy Fairy and Katie the Kitten Fairy5
I purchased Katie the Kitten Fairy and Lauren the Puppy Fairy to use with my R.E.A.D. group at a local elementary school. Both books were quickly chosen to read. The children seemed to really enjoy them and I look forward to purchasing more of this series to use with my R.E.A.D. students next year.

Bisky and his fellow Redwallers must summon all their courage to face the evil horde of slithering snakes and vicious ravens. From underground tunnels to the tops of trees, the fearless Redwallers, with the help of their woodland friends, battle some of their most vicious enemies yet in an exhilarating, terrifying treasure hunt.

A little bit below the usual Redwall fare3
Let me start this off by saying I am a HUGE fan of Brian Jacques and all of his Redwall books. I have read them all and enjoyed them a lot. Yes, they do tend to follow the same formula, but honestly, that is part of the reason I love them. I know what to expect and yet there is always something new thrown in there.

All that to say I read Doomwyte and was a bit disapointed when I finished it. First off, I found the gore factor to be rather high in this one, not in actual battle scenes...but how several characters were killed off. Death by boiling water was to me, a tad more gruesome than earlier books. Also, I found the torturing scenes to be a bit much. Especially as they kept going on and on. And finally I was a bit annoyed at how at the end of the book, anybeast who had lived had apparently been married off. It was just such a neat and tidy ending that almost didn't seem to flow with the rest of the book.

As a whole, I enjoyed this book. I was just surprised at how Mr. Jacques seems to have upped the "disturbingness" of this book. It was not needed and for me, it took away from the story.

Still, I recommend this book to anyone (with a word of caution) and continue to be a lifelong fan of the Redwall series and Brian Jacques!

    The Redwall saga continues 5
My grandson loves this series even though he is now a freshman in high school, a credit to Brian Jacques who tells intriguing and engaging stories appealing to all age groups.

When I was a kid I remember having this amazing dot-to-dot book. I saw page after page of dots and had no idea what they were before I started. It's been a long time since I've seen anything like that. I really wanted to recreate the magical experience I had for people today.

I had been looking for a fun Dot-to-Dots book for awhile but all I ever found were the very simple kid dot-to-dot books until I found these books which so far come Books 1-6. And, I know we're hoping more will come out soon as we need our Dot-to-Dot fix since these are so much fun!! I loved these as a kid and really LOVE these books as an even BIGGER kid (kid-at-heart). I bought all 6 of them, going to buy the puzzle dot-to-dots and keep waiting for more. If you loved these as a kid then you'll definitely

    Goodnight Moon

    Goodnight Moon

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room--to the picture of the three little bears sitting in chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one--he says goodnight.

In this classic of modern children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

    Amazon.com Review
Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book)

    From Publishers Weekly
Just in time for gift-giving season, the two hardcover staples for every nursery Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown, illus. by Clement Hurd are now available in a handsome fabric-covered shrink-wrapped cardboard sleeve as A Margaret Wise Brown Gift Set. In addition, an oversize board book edition of Goodnight Moon makes the great green room larger than ever, allowing readers to trace with ease the tiny mouse that appears in each spread. (Sept.)

Klutz books are the best! 5
These books are creative, educational, high quality, and fun! My children have several versions of Klutz books, and they are all wonderful. They provide a cure for boredom that both kids and adults can appreciate. This one as all the others, is hands-on!

Loved this book as a child.5
Similar to a few other reviewers, I loved this book when I was a kid. This is a book I would recommend to any parent or child. I have nothing but fond memories of this book. I hadn't seen this book in years and I still remember being introduced to many fascinating subjects from this book.

Also my first science book, highly recommended.5
Like another reviewer, I recently found this on my shelf and was curious to see whether it was in print. I'm 22 now and must've been around 8 when I got it.

I'm in University now, studying software engineering, and I have to say that this book really spurred my interest in science. It comes with so many cool things, a magnet, agar, diffraction grating, and a fresnel lens.

Highly recommend this to parents, aunts, and uncles looking for an awesome gift for a youngster in the family. The kid won't be disappointed once they get into it after expecting an action figure or video game.

Enjoyed it a lot-requires me to make it work well4
I love the book as does my 6 year old son but it does sort of require me to reinforce the doing of affirmations which sounds like a great idea but does not always happen. Definitely worth it and hopefully we'll spend more time telling ourselves how great we are in front of the mirror!

Positive messages about how to change your thinking5
As a big fan of Louise Hay I was thrilled that she wrote a book for children. While it's not the most exciting children's book, my son has grown to like the way when things are bad in the story they change their outlook. The concept is not entirely lost on him and I'm hoping that these are lessons that he can take out into the world as he grows.

It is about self-impowerment and making a bad situation into a more positive experience.

    Wonderful5
This is a wonderful book to build character. Louise Hay is a excellent writer and I love all of her books. You can heal your life is one book I cherish, and when I saw she wrote a children's version, I bought it. I will enjoy reading this book to my grandchildren and inspire these powerful affirmations.

    Goodnight Max (Max and Ruby)

"Goodnight, Max," says Max's sister Ruby. But Max can't get comfortable. First he spills a glass of water. Then there are all those itchy cookie crumbs in his bed...and the moon shining through his window. Will poor Max ever fall asleep? Rosemary Wells' beloved Max and Ruby are back in an irresistibly touchable book that is also a satisfying bedtime story. Toddlers won't be able to resist all the tactile elements--fourteen tempting things to touch, move, even smell--while a gently humorous story makes this the perfect book for bedtime, naptime, or anytime!

    From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Wells's latest story about Max and his sister Ruby is a board book with 14 touch-and-feel surprises, including a terrycloth towel, sandpaper crumbs, and a furry teddy. At bedtime, the toddler's red rubber elephant is thirsty, so Max gives it a glass of water, which promptly spills on his outer-space pajamas. Thus begins a series of events in which the young rabbit needs to change his pajamas three times. He just cannot get to bed, despite Ruby's efforts to quiet his complaints about a fly, the noisy rain, and the bright moon. The touch-and-feel aspects of the book are sturdy with the exception of the lace curtain and blanket, which may tear off easily. A humorous, true-to-life bedtime story with the author's typical minimal sentences and delightful watercolor-and-ink illustrations.

    A huge hit!!!5
I purchased this book for my 2 year old son who is a huge Max and Ruby fan. This has become a new favorite book, he loves the different touch and feel items on almost all of the pages. It's also just a fun story about Max trying to get to bed. Such a great book for toddlers it's become a must before bed each night. I highly recommend it.

    Received damaged and returned1
Product seemed to be packaged correctly - protected with bubble packing material. But, it was in terrible shape and several pages were bent. It was to be a small Christmas stocking stuffer for my son and there was no time to replace it through a reorder. So, I sent it back for a prompt refund - which Amazon did efficiently.
