Great book, but watch out for inappropriate things. 1
This is a really cool book, and I've given it to three children in my family, all who have loved it. HOWEVER, this Christmas I gave it to my nephew who found a page in which the project is to "Color the things you like." The page shows various items, some of which are a whiskey bottle and shot glass, beer cans, and a syringe and spoon. If the publisher reads this, please consider removing those items as I'm sure it is mainly children who receive this book, even though the age range says "up to 99". (Note: This is really a 5-star book, but I rated it as 1-star with the hopes that the publisher is more likely to notice poor ratings.)

Love the concept of this coloring book!5
This coloring book is the perfect coloring book. It's non-traditional, but it encourages your child to build upon his/her imagination and express their individuality as well as personal artistic flair. It provides the foundation for a lot of coloring fun!

Love this series of book!! I ended up buying one for each of my eight kids ranging from 16 to 4 years old.

    Didn't receive1
I was very upset when I received an email from the seller saying that they were not going to sell the book to me because they were not going to be making any money on it. I bought it for the price that was listed on Amazon so it wasn't my fault that they didn't price it high enough to make money on. They didn't mail me the book and they credited my account back. It was very aggravating!

    Good morals with cute pictures.5
I really like this series of books. Youngsters will love the great pictures and the dinosaurs in particular. I really like the lessons learned by the little dinosaur.

    Fun Storybook4
I have bought nearly all the books in this series. I am a teacher and a mom and BOTH my kids and my students love the stories. This one is very cute. A good buy and nice present if you're browsing!!

    From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3--A tiny mollusk that longs to see the world hitches a ride aboard a humpback whale in this charming picture book. After seeing far-off islands, underwater caves, and storm-filled skies, the snail feels impossibly small--until the whale is beached in a harbor, and she saves the day by writing a note on the blackboard of a nearby school to summon help. The message that even the smallest among us can help others will not be lost on children, and neither will the poetic language: "A humpback whale, immensely long,/Who sang to the snail a wonderful song/Of shimmering ice and coral caves/And shooting stars and enormous waves." Donaldson's smooth, sprightly rhyming scheme buoys the story and never falters. The flat, cartoonish look of Scheffler's multimedia illustrations perfectly complements the tone of the text. The rollicking language and bright pictures make this a great choice for reading aloud.--Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia

My 4 year old likes this one.5
Have previously bought Gruffalo book from same author and my son also enjoys this one for a bedtime read.

    another 5 stars5
Thoroughly enjoyable -- this was given to us by friends and has become one of the favorites in our household. The text has a fun cadence that makes reading it fun, and my one year old enjoys listening to it. Eventually, I think she will enjoy the story, too. The graphics are rich, and we find something new on each page each time we read it.

    The Snail and the Whale5
This book has a nice story. Easy reading to keep a young child attention and I love the artwork. This is a Christmas present for my 3 year old grandson and I think this will be another favorite to add to his library. Glad I found this book on your website.

    The Doll People

    The Doll People

    The Doll People

Annabelle Doll is eight years old-she has been for more than a hundred years. Not a lot has happened to her, cooped up in the dollhouse, with the same doll family, day after day, year after year. . . until one day the Funcrafts move in.

    Amazon.com Review
Annabelle Doll is 8 years old--and has been for over 100 years. Nothing much has changed in the dollhouse during that time, except for the fact that 45 years ago, Annabelle's Auntie Sarah disappeared from the dollhouse without a trace. After all this time, restless Annabelle is becoming more and more curious about her aunt's fate. And when she discovers Auntie Sarah's old diary, she becomes positively driven. Her cautious family tries to discourage her, but Annabelle won't be stopped, even though she risks Permanent Doll State, in which she could turn into a regular, nonliving doll. And when the "Real Pink Plastic" Funcraft family moves in next door, the Doll family's world is turned upside down--in more ways than one!

Fans of The Borrowers and Stuart Little will love this exciting story of adventure and mystery. The relationship between the two doll families, one antique, one modern, is hilariously, wonderfully drawn. The Funcrafts are reckless and raucous, with fearlessness born of their unbreakable plastic parts. The Doll family is reserved and somewhat prim, even though they occasionally break into '60s tunes like "Respect" in their sing-alongs. Annabelle is a heroine with integrity and gumption. Ann Martin (The Babysitters Club series) and Laura Godwin create a witty, intriguing tale, illustrated with humor and a clever eye for detail by Brian Selznick. (Ages 7 to 11) --Emilie Coulter

    From Publishers Weekly
Passed down from one generation to the next, the Doll family has lived in the same dollhouse, located in the same room of the Palmer family's house, for 100 years. While the world outside has changed, their own lives have notDwith two significant exceptions. First, Auntie Sarah Doll suddenly and mysteriously disappeared 45 years ago, when the Doll family belonged to Kate Palmer's grandmother. More recently, the modern, plastic Funcraft family has moved into Kate's little sister's room. Following the time-honored traditions of such well-loved works as Rumer Godden's The Doll's House, The Mennyms by Sylvia Waugh and Pam Conrad's and Richard Egielski's The Tub People, Martin and Godwin inventively spin out their own variation on the perennially popular theme of toys who secretly come to life. By focusing on Annabelle's and Tiffany Funcraft's risky mission to find Auntie Sarah, the authors provide plenty of action and suspense, yet it is their skillfully crafted details about the dolls' personalities and daily routines that prove most memorable. Selznick's pencil illustrations cleverly capture the spark of life inhabiting the dolls' seemingly inanimate bodies. The contemporary draftsmanship frees the art from nostalgia even while the layoutDwhich presents the illustrations as standalone compositions as well as imaginatively integrated borders and vignettesDreinforces the old-fashioned mood of the doll theme. Doll lovers may well approach their imaginative play with renewed enthusiasm and a sense of wonder after reading this fun-filled adventure. Ages 7-10. (Aug.)

    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-A lighthearted touch and a dash of drama make this a satisfying read. When Annabelle Doll finds her Aunt Sarah's journal, she hopes it offers a clue to the whereabouts of her aunt, who has been missing for 45 years. Annabelle is forever eight years old-the same age as Kate, the current owner of the Victorian dollhouse in which she and her family have lived for the past century. Their new neighbors, the all-plastic Funcrafts, who arrive for Kate's younger sister's birthday, are modern and brashly confident. Their pink plastic house has a barbecue, a computer, and a VCR. Tiffany, the Funcraft doll-girl, is just the right age to be a first real friend for Annabelle, and her daring spirit inspires the child's quest for her aunt. Determined and brave, she persuades her cautious parents to let her venture out of the dollhouse in search of her relative. Along with the usual perils of moving about in the real world, there is the risk of being seen by a human and succumbing to "doll state" or even worse, "permanent doll state." Selznick's illustrations are perfectly suited to the innocent charm of the dolls and do much to draw readers into their world. The delightful endpapers, which resemble pages from toy catalogs past and present, tell their own tale about the characters. A light and uncomplicated fantasy/adventure in the tradition of Rumer Godden's doll stories or even Pam Conrad's The Tub People (HarperCollins, 1989).

A delightful series, especially for a young and advanced reader5
This book is thoroughly charming. What I like best about the series is that it is perfect for my first grade daughter, an advanced reader for whom it is challenging to find books that engage her without introducing topics/subject matter/behavior that is inappropriate for a seven year old. I am entranced by these books, as is she.

    an amazing kids book 5
hey guys! this was one of the best book ever! i gave this book to my daughter for her birthday and we loved it so much! it was funny and happy and a greart kids read. from me this would definatly get a whopping 5 stars! :) i also read the other two books and they were just as good!

Great book for boys or girls--incuding the read aloud crowd!5
I read to my 6 year old boy every night. We'd just finished Brian Selznick's wonderful "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," so I was looking for more work by him. We came across The Doll People, and even though he only illustrated it, we gave it a try. The end result: It is excellent!

Ms. Martin and Ms. Godwin pace the story beautifully--filling it with humor, suspense and mystery. Mr. Selznick's illustrations are rich in detail--and really capture the moments so well. Though the reading level is too advanced for my 6 year old--it makes a great read aloud book.

Also, don't make the mistake of thinking that because this is about dolls, only girls would like it. My son couldn't wait to read the next chapter every night--and I loved seeing him laugh at the humor, gasp at the suspense, and cheer during the adventures. Also, because it is a mystery, we had a lot of fun speculating the next morning about what the outcome would be. It even has some nice subtle messages about friendship, taking chances, and not judging people at first glance. It's just an all around great book!

One more note--the paperback version has a beautiful binding, so even for a gift, I would just go with that.

    Oh, Yikes!: History's Grossest Moments

    Oh, Yikes!: History's Grossest Moments

    Oh, Yikes!: History's Grossest Moments

Gross is back and viler than ever! From the author of Oh, Yuck! the perennial bestseller about science with over 610,000 copies in print, comes OH, YIKES!, an illustrated encyclopedia of history’s messiest, dumbest, grossest, wackiest, and weirdest moments.

If kids think pus and gas are fun, wait until they hear the lowdown on the real Dracula, samurai, gladiators, guillotines and vomitoriums, pirates, Vikings, witch trials, and the world’s poxiest plagues. Impeccably researched, deliciously wry, and subversively educational (check out the toilet-paper timeline), OH, YIKES! covers people, events, institutions, and really bad ideas, alphabetically from April Fool’s Day to zany Zoos. Here are the Aztecs, sacrificing 250,000 people a year for the gods—and for food. Fearsome Attila the Hun, scourge of the steppes whose spinning eyes terrified his friends and whose mastery of horses terrorized his enemies (how does someone so evil die? Nosebleed!). Saur, the 11th-century dog-king of Norway (and not too bad as kings go). Henry VIII and his marital problems, the story of the Abominable Snowman and the Loch Ness Monster, why sailors in the old days preferred eating in the dark (hint: you can’t see what’s crawling in your food), and the answer to the question, “How did knights in armor go to the bathroom?”

Topped off with hundreds of illustrations and photographs along with hands-on activities that bring the past to life, OH, YIKES! puts the juice in history in a way that makes it irresistible.

    Not just for kids!5
My eleven year old read this book out loud to me on several occasions-his favorite being what he learned about the number thirteen. Since he was born on a Friday 13th he's always been curious why it has been associated with bad luck. To his delight, thanks to this book, he learned the number 13 is actually quite lucky! But Friday, not so much. Oh well, at least he gained some great knowledge and it wasn't always so gross, just rather unusual.

I found myself glancing through this book and finding many interesting facts about things I've always wondered about. Such as diapers in the middle ages, hair styles throughout history, fashion and the lives of many queens, in particular Elizabeth I. She used a lead based face paint to achieve her 'whitish' complexion and it created such large craters on her face, by the end of her life she had to coat her face with 1/2 inch of the stuff to cover it all up. Who would of known that it would kill her.

Great book! Highly recommended not just for the kids, but for the adults as well.

GREAT read, especially for those that don't like history4
This is an GREAT read, especially for those that don't like history. It has alot of fun information in an easy to read style. My children think it is even better than "Oh, Yuck: . . ." by the same author.

    Another great book.....5

    Puppy, nessy.4
Reviewed by Evan Weldon (age 6) for Reader Views (11/08)

"Marley and Me: Meet Marley" is a good book about a yellow lab puppy named Marley. One time Marley made a humongous mess in the garage. Marley also stole a turkey from the next-door neighbor. He liked to chew on things, too. Marley was always getting in trouble, but luckily he was really cute and his family loved him.

I really liked the photos in the book. One of my favorite photos was of Marley running on the beach. It was cute because his ears were flapping in the air.

I would recommend "Marley and Me: Meet Marley" by Natalie Engel to people who like dogs. It was a pretty easy book to read.

My son was so excited to get this book. It's all he's talked about for the last three months. I recommend it for all Star Wars fans. It's a beautiful book and a great value on Amazon.

    Worth it for the extras!!!5
I purchased this book just for the extra cutaways! I had a few of the others, but this one was worth it to me as I am a fan of the first set of films and characters and this book had more ships from ROTJ that were unavailable before. Really cool and to me, completely worth it. They added the A-Wing and the B-wing among others. forget the individual books, just get this one, especially if you are a fan of the original films designs.

Humans and half-bloods alike agree--Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a series fit for heroes! Re-live the adventure from the beginning with this boxed set of the first three books.

The Lightning Thief Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. When his mom tells him the truth about where he came from, she takes him to the one place he'll be safe--Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island). There, Percy learns that the father he never knew is actually Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon Percy finds himself caught up in a mystery that could lead to disastrous consequences. Together with his friends--a satyr and other the demigod daughter of Athena--Percy sets out on a quest to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

The Sea of Monsters After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly calm. But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters--the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia--only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new nameL: the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family--one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke...

The Titan's Curse When Percy Jackson receives a distress call from his friend Grover, he immediately prepares for battle. He knows he'll need his powerful demigod allies, Annabeth and Thalia, at his side; his trusty broze sword Riptide; and... a ride from his mom. The demigods race to the rescue, to find that Grover has made an important discovery: two new powerful half-bloods whose parentage is unknown. But that's not all that awaits them. The Titan lord, Kronos, has set up his most devious trap yet, and the young heroes have unwittingly fallen prey. Hilarious and action-packed, this third adventure in the series finds Percy faced with his most dangerous challenge so far: the chilling prophecy of the Titan's curse.

This series kept my children's noses (aged 10 to 17) in the pages and provided a great introduction to Greek mythology. biscuit Storybook collection5
Easy to read, my kindergartener knew most of the words and was able to read it to me! Great for the transition from kindergarten to first grade.

Sweet Puppy! Ten Times the Love!5
The Biscuit Storybook collection contains ten different Biscuit stories that see this adorable puppy and his owner get in quite a few unusual situations and are able to see the bright side and everything turns out alright. From puppies and kittens crashing the picnic so that both owners and pets can enjoy the food and day together, to Biscuit trying to meet all the animals at the pet show in a series of "off the leash" mishaps as he ends up winning the award of #1 friend, to simply refusing to sleep despite all the hugs and midnight snacks... this includes a wide variety of places, themes and situations.

You get ten stories, held in a hardbound volume. The pages are a little on the thin side, but it's great to have so many on hand at once. I just wish they would do a second volume to compliment this one. Perhaps a holiday collection?

Both of my daughters love this book and some of the stories are simple enough that my 3 year old can read them to me. The word placement, repetition and sound switchups help encourage children to read and understand the words they are reading from the page. And of course, these are all beautifully illustrated. After seeing some of the more stylized children's books, it is a refreshing change to be able to enjoy the beauty of artwork along with the well written stories.

A perfect addition to any child's library. The smallest baby will enjoy seeing the pictures, toddlers will love hearing the stories over and over again, and older children just entering school like reading it to themselves. I have often read this to my 3 year old in its entirety, cover to cover during our read together time. And she just wanted to hear it all over again once its done.

There's no higher praise than that.

    Great Collection5
My just turned 5 year old daughter LOVES this book. She will read it from cover to cover in one sitting. The Biscuit series is such a good one for children just learning to read and this is book is wonderful to include so many of these great stories.

"Dr. Dawn Huebner has created a completely accessible, easy-to-understand book to show worrying children a new way of life. Kids will breathe a sigh of relief to learn solutions that really work." -- Tamar Chansky, PhD, Author of Freeing Your Child from Anxiety

Introduction to Parents and Caregivers -

If you are the parent or caregiver of an anxious child, you know what it feels like to be held hostage. So does your child. Children who worry too much are held captive by their fears. They go to great lengths to avoid frightening situations, and ask the same anxiety-based questions over and over again. Yet the answers give them virtually no relief. Parents and caregivers find themselves spending huge amounts of time reassuring, coaxing, accommodating, and doing whatever else they can think of to minimize their child’s distress.

But it doesn’t work. The anxiety remains in control. As you have undoubtedly discovered, simply telling an anxious child to stop worrying doesnÂ’t help at all. Nor does applying adult logic, or allowing your child to avoid feared situations, or offering reassurance every time the fears are expressed.

Anxiety has a way of growing, spreading, shifting in form, and generally resisting efforts to talk it out of existence. But there is hope. What to Do When You Worry Too Much will teach you and your child a new and more successful way to think about and manage anxiety. The techniques described in this book will help your child take control.

This book was a good resourse for you to read WITH your child. had some helpful hints and tools to distract from the anxious episodes. It held the interest of my child and helped him to articulate some of his own feelings. NOT A CURE. But still useful.

    Very practical book!5
I'm a therapist who works with children, teens and families. I found this book very practical, concise and "user friendly." I plan to use it with many of my clients.

I was worried my almost 11 year old...4
would think this simple book was beneath him but he liked it -he did not do any of the activities but he was receptive to listening. We went over it in one night in about 30 minutes (it is very short- many pictures) but he has wanted the allocated "worry time" of about 15 minutes every night since.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up - Nineteen-year-old cabbie Ed Kennedy has little in life to be proud of: his dad died of alcoholism, and he and his mom have few prospects for success. He has little to do except share a run-down apartment with his faithful yet smelly dog, drive his taxi, and play cards and drink with his amiable yet similarly washed-up friends. Then, after he stops a bank robbery, Ed begins receiving anonymous messages marked in code on playing cards in the mail, and almost immediately his life begins to swerve off its beaten-down path. Usually the messages instruct him to be at a certain address at a certain time. So with nothing to lose, Ed embarks on a series of missions as random as a toss of dice: sometimes daredevil, sometimes heartwarmingly safe. He rescues a woman from nightly rape by her husband. He brings a congregation to an abandoned parish. The ease with which he achieves results vacillates between facile and dangerous, and Ed's search for meaning drives him to complete every task. But the true driving force behind the novel itself is readers' knowledge that behind every turn looms the unknown presence - either good or evil - of the person or persons sending the messages. Zusak's characters, styling, and conversations are believably unpretentious, well conceived, and appropriately raw. Together, these key elements fuse into an enigmatically dark, almost film-noir atmosphere where unknowingly lost Ed Kennedy stumbles onto a mystery - or series of mysteries - that could very well make or break his life. - Hillias J. *Starred Review* Gr. 9-12. Ed is a 19-year-old loser only marginally connected to the world; he's the son that not even his mother loves. But his life begins to change after he acts heroically during a robbery. Perhaps it's the notoriety he receives that leads to his receiving playing cards in the mail. Ed instinctively understands that the scrawled words on the aces are clues to be followed, which lead him to people he will help (including some he'll have to hurt first). But as much as he changes those who come into his life, he changes himself more. Two particular elements will keep readers enthralled: the panoply of characters who stream in and out of the story, and the mystery of the person sending Ed on the life-altering missions. Concerning the former, Zusak succeeds brilliantly. Ed's voice is assured and unmistakeable, and other characters, although seen through Ed's eyes, are realistically and memorably evoked (readers will almost smell Ed's odoriferous dog when it ambles across the pages). As for the ending, however, Zusak is too clever by half. He offers too few nuts-and-bolts details before wrapping things up with an unexpected, somewhat unsatisfying recasting of the narrative. Happily, that doesn't diminish the life-affirming intricacies that come before. Ilene Cooper

    Review
The Book Thief is unsettling and unsentimental, yet ultimately poetic. Its grimness and tragedy run through the reader’s mind like a black-and-white movie, bereft of the colors of life. Zusak may not have lived under Nazi domination, but The Book Thief deserves a place on the same shelf with The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel’s Night. It seems poised to become a classic.” -USA Today
"Zusak doesn’t sugarcoat anything, but he makes his ostensibly gloomy subject bearable the same way Kurt Vonnegut did in Slaughterhouse-Five: with grim, darkly consoling humor.”
    - Time Magazine
"Elegant, philosophical and moving...Beautiful and important."
    - Kirkus Reviews, Starred
    "An extraordinary narrative."
    - School Library Journal, Starred
"Exquisitely written and memorably populated, Zusak's poignant tribute to words, survival, and their curiously inevitable entwinement is a tour
de force to be not just read but inhabited."
    - The Horn Book Magazine, Starred
"One of the most highly anticipated young-adult books in years."

I suppose I was looking to be blown away I as I was with the Book Thief.
Although this was a fine novel with a great mystery to keep me turning the pages, I found some of the writing sytle and language hard to get through. The main character grew on me and I really came to love him for his strengths and weaknesses.

Great Book, til the end 4
I Am the Messenger was an enjoyable read. It was hard to put down and the stories were very interesting. I do wish that the ending would have been a little different. I feel like the book just dies at the end and it was really disappointing after a great story.

Ed was a great character and some of the people he helps were also fascinating charaters. I felt that some of his friends could have been a little more developed. Some of them did gain interesting stories towards the end, but I wanted more from characters like Audrey and Ritchie.

Fantastic beginning, then downhill to the end...2
I just finished the Australian book titled "I Am the Messenger" by Markus Zusak; the first book I've ever read by this author, though one of his other books (The Book Thief) has received wide acclaim. The story is meant for older teens only, I'd say (due to strong language and mature situations) and is a complete departure from the sort of YA books I usually read. It got off to an amusing and very promising start when Ed, a teen drifting through life without any clear direction, foils a bank robbery. Soon after he begins receiving anonymous messages directing him to locations where he has the opportunity to do some good in the world. The book is very well written, and the situations in which the protagonist finds himself are occasionally horrifying, sometimes amusing, and in a few instances very touching. (All the scenes with Milla rather got to me, for instance.)

Even though the character's actions---and the plot in general---continued to become increasingly far-fetched and unbelievable as the book went on, the story still held my attention. Well, right up until the big twist ending and reveal, that is! Literally within the last five pages, the author introduced an incredibly stupid and annoying deux ex machina plot device to solve the mystery of who exactly is sending the notes. This shoddy, lazy finish to the story had me ready to throw the book right across the room. I certainly had a lot of choice words to say about the conclusion (some of which I had learned from this very book!) which I cannot print out in this review. Ha!

So, a mixed-to-negative review on this one from me. The good points of the book, and the writing skill of the author, were overshadowed by an increasingly convoluted and illogical plot progression in the second half of the manuscript, and a crappy, crappy ending. I'm still so ticked off by it, in fact, that I don't know that I'll bother to seek out anything else the author has written...

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9–At the outset of this fast-paced tale by Rick Riordan (Hyperion/Miramax, 2005), it would seem that Percy Jackson is just another New York kid diagnosed with ADHD, who has good intentions, a nasty stepfather, and a long line of schools that have rejected him. The revelation of his status as half-blood offspring of one of the Greek gods is nicely packaged, and it's easy to believe that Mount Olympus, in modern times, has migrated to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building (the center of Western civilization) while the door to Hades can be found at DOA Recording Studio, somewhere in LA. With his new friends, a disguised satyr, and the half-blood daughter of Athena, Percy sets out across the country to rectify a feud between Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. Along the way they must cope with the Furies, Medusa, motorcycle thug Aires, and various other immortals. Although some of Jesse Bernstein's accents fail (the monster from Georgia, for instance, has no Southern trace in her voice), he does a fine job of keeping the main characters' tones and accents distinguishable. He convincingly portrays Percy, voicing just the right amount of prepubescent confusion, ironic wit, and the ebbing and waning of concern for himself and those around him. Mythology fans will love this take and kids who haven't been inculcated with the Classical canon will learn aspects of it here while having no trouble following a rollicking good–and modern–adventure.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

Gr. 6-9. The escapades of the Greek gods and heroes get a fresh spin in the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, about a contemporary 12-year-old New Yorker who learns he's a demigod. Perseus, aka Percy Jackson, thinks he has big problems. His father left before he was born, he's been kicked out of six schools in six years, he's dyslexic, and he has ADHD. What a surprise when he finds out that that's only the tip of the iceberg: he vaporizes his pre-algebra teacher, learns his best friend is a satyr, and is almost killed by a minotaur before his mother manages to get him to the safety of Camp Half-Blood--where he discovers that Poseidon is his father. But that's a problem, too. Poseidon has been accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt, and unless Percy can return the bolt, humankind is doomed. Riordan's fast-paced adventure is fresh, dangerous, and funny. Percy is an appealing, but reluctant hero, the modernized gods are hilarious, and the parallels to Harry Potter are frequent and obvious. Because Riordan is faithful to the original myths, librarians should be prepared for a rush of readers wanting the classic stories. Chris Sherman

    Awesome Read!5
My 11-year old, avid reader, says this is one of the best books she has ever read!

    the lightning thief5
One of the best childrens books I have read, and I read a lot of them. My Grandson brings me all his favorite books to read, and this series of books is the very best !!!!!!!

    The Lightning Thief4
The setting of the book takes place during the time of Greek Gods, demigods, satyrs and other mythological creatures. The book is about two boys named Percy and Grover. Grover always has a sight on everything, like death. At school one day, Grover had a sight of his teacher killing him with a magical pen. The two boys go on a class field trip with a teacher named Mr. Brunner, who uses a wheel chair. They like their teacher a lot, but Percy decides to vaporize Mr. Brunner while on this field trip. It's at this point when Percy begins to suspect that his life is not what it seems.

I thought the plot outline of the The Lightning Thief was very suspenseful and tense. For Percy Jackson, his life was very tough for him as a kid. He was kicked out of all the schools he attended. He was very troubled. Percy Jackson is a demigod. His dad was named Poseidon, goddess of controlling water. His mother was not a God, she was undetermined. His parents have vanished, in the hands of Hades, goddess of keeping. Percy is on a mission to save his mom from Hades but it takes him a long time because something is in his way.

Another book that The Lightning Thief can connect to is a book called Maximum Ride. There's a connection to the book because Maximum Ride and The Lightning Thief are both about Mythology and Greek Gods and other mythological creatures. The biggest strengths in The Lightning Thief are how the characters are on missions to save certain things. They have special powers that they can use. Another strength is how the book uses Greek gods such as demigods, satyrs and martyrs. A weakness is how the author kind of goes off in another world, like he doesn't always talk about the gods. One last strength is how the book shows the turning point of when Percy overcomes his learning difficulties.

All in all, I think the book was pretty good, and well written. I recommend this book to people who enjoy mythology. This is the type of audience who would read the book. The book also shows how someone with difficulties, such as Percy, turns these difficulties into strengths. The author keeps the same audience throughout the whole book. The genre of the book is mythology because it talks about Greek Gods.
