    Great Book5
My 5 year old twins and I really enjoy this book. It helps develop vocabulary and the kids really enjoy it. Fun to hear them quote the words from the book, or use them, during the day. However, along with the wonderful "big" words that are used, there are a few words I don't prefer used in my house..like "snot" and "pee".

BIG WORDS is a BIG DEAL!4
I love this book, my son who is 2 loves it and can now read these big words. I just wished there were more pages. Overall the book is great and everything rhymes which really grabs his attention.

    Completely Amazing!!5
This book is excellent! I purchased it for my daughter who is 6. However, I think it would be great to start with children around the age of 3 or so :)

    Customer Reviews

THIS is the cause of Global Warming1
I liked the first three books. ALL of them, which is more than I could say for the Twilight series.
And then we hit four and-- BOOM! Something in Patterson's head exploded. Well, either that or he decided he could write this in between doing the morning crossword and drinking his coffee.
This is the WORST book I have EVER read. EVER. And I have read many, MANY bad books.
Lemme just say that I believe that global warming is global issue and I STILL found this book fully repulsive.
He fully disregarded the plot to preach to the "itty babeez" about it. He left GAPING PLOT HOLES and THINGS THAT DON'T MAKE SENSE. "Oh! Iggy! You can SEE now or something!" What? "Oh there was just an exploding pizza, but we're okay." WHAT? "Let's go to Antarctica and obey the government LULZYLULZLULZ!" WHAT???
Seriously. Come ON. (Also, the Max become a OCD basket case, and her relationship with Fang and Angel just got CREEPY.)

    I couldn't belive this ending.5
I couldn't believe how good this book was. I was so surprised that they survived the HURRICANE of the century. But the Uber-Director was a little scary for me. The book surprised me like no other book had before. This book is a definite 10 Stars out of 5. The book was better than all of the other books combined.
I couldn't believe how fast this book flew by. HAHA HAHA I crack myself up all the time. But the books static character would be Ari. I think that because at the beginning of the series he wanted to hunt Max down and Kill her and when he finally starts to hang with her he gets kid like again.

    action-packed middle school thriller4
The Feds want to control the Flock, so they offer a devious deal. They will provide the six teens with wings shelter and an education if they cooperate with the authorities. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel consider the offer, but prefer not to be placed under a microscope by adults, who tend to try to harm them.

They flee before the Feds turn their offer into a prison like sentence. The Flock head to Antarctica figuring the isolated frozen continent should prove safe. Environmental scientists studying global warming's impact upon the ice cap welcome the runaway teens. However the evil Director has replaced his failed Erasers with invincible mechanized soldiers. His plan is to sell the Flock for billions each to the highest bidder. Antarctica is no problem for him and his mechanical horde.

The fourth Maximum Ride is an exhilarating 200 proof action-packed middle school thriller. However the plot feels much thinner than the previous entries and somewhat disconnected. Still the Flock remains cool (and not just because of the climate) especially Max who quips his way from one fire to another even in Antarctica as he and his best buddies must save the world while eluding the Director and the Feds who have plans for THE ANGEL EXPERIMENT participants.

    About the Author
During his distinguished career Arnold Lobel wrote and/or illustrated over 70 books for children. To his illustrating credit, he had a Caldecott Medal book -- Fables (1981) -- and two Caldecott Honor Books-his own Frog and Toad are Friends (1971) and Hildilid's Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (1972). To his writing credit, he had a Newbery Honor Book -- Frog and Toad Together (1973). But to his greatest credit, he had a following of literally millions of young children with whom he shared the warmth and humor of his unpretentious vision of life.

Though he was a born storyteller -- he began making up stories extemporaneously to entertain his fellow second-graders in Schenectady, New York, where he grew up in the care of his grandparents. Mr. Lobel called himself a "lucky amateur" in terms of his writing. Viewing himself as a professionally trained illustrator (he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute), he said, "I know how to draw pictures. With writing, I don't really know what I'm doing. It's very intuitive."

In addition to the Frog and Toad books, Owl at Home, Mouse Tales, The Book of Pigericks, and many other popular books he created, Mr. Lobel also illustrated other writers' texts that captured his fancy. He viewed this as "something different and challenging." Often his illustrations for those books showed a different aspect of his personality and his artistic expertise, ranging from his meticulous dinosaurs in Dinosaur Time by Peggy Parish to his chilling pen-and-ink drawings in Nightmares: Poems to Trouble Your Sleep by Jack Prelutsky, about which Booklist wrote, "Young readers will be amazed that the gentle Lobel of Frog and Toad fame can be so comfortably diabolic."

In 1977 Mr. Lobel and his wife, Anita, a distinguished children's book author and artist in her own right, collaborated on their first book, How the Rooster Saved the Day, chosen by School Library Journal as one of the Best Books of the Year, 1977. They then collaborated on three more books, A Treeful of Pigs, a 1979 ALA Notable Book; On Market Street, a 1982 Caldecott Honor Book; and The Rose in My Garden, a 1984 Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Book.

    Arnold Lobel died in 1987.

    Frog And Toad Collection5
This is a wonderful collection of books, perfect for my first grader to really get some reading practice. However, it was suggested to buy Frog and Toad are Friends along with the collection, stating that most people who buy the Collection also buy Frog and Toad are Friends. When I recieved the shipment I was disappointed to find that Frog and Toad are Friends is in the Collection. It would have helped to have the books in the Collection listed so I would have known to pick a different one.

    Great Set of whymsical books5
Wonderful little set of books; sweet illustrations and most importantly it arrived in time to put in under the Christmas tree for my dude. A little bit advanced for my reader but something he'll grow into.

    A Classic and Favorite5
These books were favorites of mine as a child and I'm so blessed to be able to share these classics with my own child.

Captain Underpants Wipes Out the Competition5
My son, Jacob (age 7.5) has just finished reading Vol. 8, "Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People" to me out loud. It is the latest and last (so far) in the Captain Underpants series. The author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey, is an awesome talent. All the C.U. books contain sci-fi adventure built for children and are filled with super power juice, hypno-rings, time travel, alternate universes, evil teachers and principals, grandparents, robots and so on. They are also filled with humor (most of it, despite the titles, in exceedingly good taste) that appeals to the kids as well as to their parents (mean teacher Miss Anthrope), albeit perhaps at different levels. I laughed out loud consistently as my son read these to me. The dialog is snappy and cute, as are the illustrations and the books within books (comics drawn by the main characters, Harold and George complete with little kid illustrations and misspellings) that punctuate all the entries in the series.

A reasonable reading skill level (2 grade and above) is required for these and they are definitely better read BY children than TO children but are as enjoyable to adults as to their kids. These are great. Highly recommended.

    little miss gift set5
PRO - excellent books for ages 4ish to 8ish (clever and entertaining); nice gift and nice packaging; great price (six books that usually sell for about $4 each).

CON - The description and picture are a little misleading though. They don't tell you how many books are in the set and the picture makes it look like you will be getting more than 6 books.

    Excellent Buy5
When I priced these books at our local store they were almost $5.00 a piece. I was elated to find a set like this for my neice for a fraction of the cost!

I thought it was an entire set3
I was a little dissapointed it was only 6 books...it should have said that in the product discription. Anyway, my kids love them.

    Amazon.com Review
A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.

Jan Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folktales, fairy tales, and poems, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear. Her special signature in her detailed artwork is the intricate borders, seen in this book as birch-bark panels with embroidered details and mitten-shaped vignettes offering additional insights into the story line. Brett is at her best when she illustrates animals, and the expressions on the faces of her creatures are a delight. She carefully researched the costumes, furniture, and house in this traditional Ukrainian tale--all are authentic. A fine story to read on a frosty night with a cup of hot chocolate, and if you ever get your fill of The Mitten, you can always try its delightfully original companion book, The Hat, winner of the 1998 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. (Ages 4 to 8)

    From Publishers Weekly
Baba, Nicki's grandmother, knits pure white mittens for him, even though she is afraid that he will lose them in the snow. Sure enough, the first time Nicki is out, he drops one and some animals promptly move into its snug wool interior. First comes a mole, then a rabbit, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a bear and, finally, a mouse. That mouse tickles the bear's nose and he sneezes, dislodging all of the animals at once. Nicki finds his mitten, and takes it home, but Baba is left to wonder about how it became so enormously stretched out. Brett's magnificent paintings feature her usual array of folk details, and this time, intricate knitting tracks, ornate embroidery, the crusty, peeling texture of the birch bark borders and the exquisite patterns found in Baba's homey rooms. Readers will sit back, suspend belief and welcome this tall tale from the Ukrainian tradition. Ages 4-8.

    Wonderful book to share5
The lush illustrations in this book offer a wonderful chance for an adult to share time studying them with a youngster. Readers can feel the frosty air of the forest, smell the wood smoke in the fireplace, and hear the footfalls of wild creatures as they examine each page. So, bundle up, nestle down, and read this with someone young--even if it's just your inner child, you'll both be very satisfied by this lovely story and its mezmerizing pictures.

    Packing was bad4
Book is great but it came in a very thin envelope with no padding and the book itself was folded in half during delivery. It was in pretty bad shape actually....

    Wonderful on many accounts5
We borrowed this book from the library and I found myself reading it to my son one day when he was upset and needed distracting. He was quickly drawn into the story. I had him participating in the story telling, something he doesn't commonly do. I would ask him I wonder who is next and from the small picture in the border he could figure out what animal was coming next. After the story was over we got out the globe and found the Ukraine and talk a bit about how its different there.

The illlustrations provide details of Ukranian traditional culture.
You will want to be in those pictures (and I want the little boy's coat).

I can understand the disappointment from those that know the original folktale and don't appreciate that it has been changed, but the result is a very enjoyable book. I will be looking for others by this author.

    Pete & Pickles

    Pete & Pickles

Pete is a perfectly predictable, practical, uncomplicated pig. At least, he was . . . before a runaway circus elephant named Pickles stampeded into his life, needing a friend. Pickles is larger than life and overflowing with imagination. She takes Pete swandiving off Niagara Falls. (Sort of.) And sledding down the Matterhorn. (Sort of.) Pete goes along for the wild ride and actually begins to enjoy himself . . . until Pickles goes too far. And Pete tells her she must leave.

Yet sometimes the simple life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed offers two new irresistible characters and a heartfelt, hilarious look at the rarity of true friendship.

    Love this book5
Breathed's books have become required bedtime reading for my two youngest kids: they pick books by Breathed and make me read them at bedtime. It's a fun story about Pete, who's life is messed up by a fun, kind elephant, Pickles.

Pure whimsy. Breathed has really hitting his stride in creating books aimed at our younger readers. I wish he would get the urge to publish more often-- his ability allows him to surpass Dr. Seuss in story telling and artwork. Still, I'm happy for the bits Berkeley publishes. (Did I mention that these kids books live on Dad's bookshelf? Right next to the Bloom County collections.)

I love the artwork in this one too. Look at the pictures while reading the story. Really-- the work is brilliant.

    Perfectly Pleasant to Read!5
Pete is a perfectly practical and predictable pig. That is until he meets Pickles, an escaped circus elephant who has a smile that can warm any heart, even Pete's.

Their adventures are just adorable to read and see...sky diving off Niagra Falls, boating (& singing) in Venice...these are just a few of the adventures these two perfectly pairable creatures do.

Berkeley Breathed, the creator and author of the famous comic strips "Opus" and "Bloom County" brings us a wonderfully imaginative, beautifully illustrated and creatively sweet tale of a pig and an elephant.

A definite recommended read, one of the few children's books out there you will not get tired of reading over and over again to your little ones.

    I cried...5
and thought of keeping the book for myself instead of giving it to my niece. Its a touching story (and I'm not one for sentimentality) about true friendship and the illustrations are amazing. I was initially put off by reviews that the book was perhaps "too scary" for children, but after reading it I think it's fine. I do think that parents/older children will appreciate it more than younger ones.

    You Can Draw Star Wars5
Purchased for our nine year old Grandson who loves Star Wars. Hopefully will help with drawing. Well put together with good instructions.

    Great Book5
I bought this book for my 10 year old son who loves star wars and loves to draw; he hasn't been able to put it down. The book is very explicit and shows you in a very graphic manner how to draw characters, machines, and others. Very good indeed I'm glad we bought it.

Not as good as the Youtube videos2
The quality of the Youtube videos surpasses the quality of the book; expectations for the book after watching the videos weren't met. Ideas for future additions might include expanding on Mr. Bush's acrylic painting techniques (future book, perhaps:>); you may enjoy the rudimentary instruction, but in my opinion it didn't align with the superior instruction given during the videos.

    amazing book!5
I was in first grade in the late 80's and we were doing a unit on the nutcracker. We went to go see the play and did a lot of music, art and english activities related to it. I was enjoying it so much that my mom bought me a copy of this book, same cover and all. I really loved the illustrations in it, from the christmas decorations to the land of sweets to all the snow. I've misplaced my copy but if I ever do find it it's a keeper!

Although many versions of the ballet call the girl Clara, she is called Marie Stahlbaum in the original E.T.A. Hoffmann story and in some versions of the ballet. This retelling is lovely. The name "Marie" is not incorrect; it just refers back to an earlier version of the story.

important part of Christmas to many5
In reference to the next review, Marie and Clara are not the same character. Marie is the little girl, and Clara is her doll.

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Shea (New Socks) makes a hilarious commentator as his hero, a small red dinosaur, elevates everyday encounters into a series of matches worthy of the WWF. Dinosaur versus... a bowl of spaghetti! announces Shea and, with a trio of bold typographic roars (and two chomps), the bowl is vanquished. Dinosaur wins again! declares Shea, as Dinosaur coolly acknowledges his triumph. Again and again, Dinosaur proves unbeatable—the foes he defeats include a pile of leaves, a big slide and talking grown-ups—but the title hints at his Achilles heel. Dinosaur may not resemble anything found in a paleontology textbook, but he's a terrific surrogate. Incorporating paper, paint, photo collage and quick strokes of crayon, Shea's freewheeling compositions convey both a beguiling spontaneity and a preschooler's sense of invincibility. Kids will be only too happy to capitulate to this irresistible package. Ages 2–6. (Sept.)

    ROAR! It's great!5
I'm not so sure it gets my kids sleepy, but we sure have fun with it. It is great to read LOUDLY - and my kids quote it all day. Lots of fun!

    Puts my two-year-old into hysterics5
I've never reviewed anything on Amazon before - but I had to share. I grabbed this book pretty much at random at the library cause I thought the dinosaur looked cute. I didn't not realize my daughter would love it so much, but she thinks it's HILARIOUS (any time you can roar at the top of your lungs repeatedly and get away with it is great). She begs me to read it over and over - and is so in love with it I think we will need to buy it. I definitely recommend it to any and all toddlers!!!

    We love this book!5
This book was showcased on Noggin (with a reading at bedtime) long before it was published. So we already knew the story by heart, but my 3-year-old daughter was still very excited to get the actual book. It's one of our new "standards" and some nights, she even sleeps with it.

Quality story. Beautiful photography. Great gift book!5
I have bought several of these as gifts for Christmas. A story you'll bring out every winter season. This one is a keeper.

    Getting Closer to Wildlife!5
What a charming book about people caring for wildlife and the forest. The photography is gorgeous and the story is beautiful yet simple. Two children have learned to take care of the wildlife in forest in the winter by building a snowman using vegetables and seeds. The animals visit the snowman and eat their fill and the children refuel the snowman with more items. The authors also explain how they have interacted with wildlife for years and the animals often walk or fly right up to them. A very nice inspiring idea.

A MUST FOR EVERY GRANDCHILD AND THEIR PARENTS5
MY HUSBAND READS A BOOK EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE TO OUR 8 AND THEIR CHILDREN. WE MAIL THEM TO THOSE WHO DON'T LIVE NEAR US SO THE DADDY CAN READ THEM. WE ALWAYS GIVE SOMETHING FOR THE MANGER FOR EACH..AND GAVE 39 TINY SNOWMEN TO EACH, FOR THEM TO PUT IN THEIR MANGER SCENE.. IT WAS WONDERFUL AS THEY SO LOVED THE STORY..

WE HAVE ALWAYS GIVEN ITEMS WITH THE STORY... AND THIS TIME HE THOUGHT OF THIS AND I WAS OVERJOYED...
HE MADE A TALL SNOWMAN OF PLYWOOD FOR "STRANGERS IN THE WOODS"FOR EACH OF OUR CHILDREN(8)
I GLUED HALF WALNUTS FOR THE MOUTH MOUTH ,AND MY GENE SHAPED WOOD LIKE A CARROT AND PAINTED THEM ORANGE.. HE SCREWED THEM ON.. WE PUT THE RED HAT ON AND I MADE A FELT RED SCARF FOR EACH..

I ONLY WISH YOU COULD HAVE SEEN THE ADULTS FACES ,AS WELL AS THE CHILDREN, AS MY GENE PULLED BACK THE DRAPES TO OUR PATIO..

THIS YEAR HE IS MAKING ONE FOR A LITTLE NEIGHBOR GIRL WHO LIVES BEHIND US, AS SHE LOVES OURS, AND THE STORY.
WE GAVE HER THE BOOK AND STUFFED SNOWMAN TOY LAST YEAR.

NEEDLESS TO SAY A SNOWMAN IS RARE IN FLORIDA!!! :)

In His Quiet Joy, nana IT IS A WONDERFUL BOOK AND SO ARE THE PICTURES
